Either we introduce a zero tolerance to drugs, with punative sentencing or we face the consequences of a drug tolerant society, where drug dealers are seen as legitimate businessmen and our children as consumers and not addicts.
Although the Commonwealth intervention was welcomed by some Indigenous leaders, it has created acrimonious divisions within Indigenous Australia and been widely criticised as punative, uninformed, discriminatory and unlikely to succeed (see Altman and Hinkson 2007 for a discussion of problematic issues regarding the intervention).
