The capital and largest city of North Korea, in the southwest-central part of the country. It was an important cultural center and Chinese colony after 108 b.c., later fell to the Japanese, and became capital of North Korea in 1948. Population: 2,780,000.

France's special envoy to North Korea, Jack Lang, said Friday following a five-day visit to the reclusive state that Pyongyang had agreed to an "exchange" with Paris on human rights issues.
AaIn his speech at the opening of the activities of the 6th session of the Syrian-Korean Committee for Commercial, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation in Pyongyang on Tuesday, Lutfi called for increasing the volume of trade exchange between the two countries to reach the level of the strong political relations.
The statement was the latest in a series of recent peace overtures made by the secretive regime in Pyongyang following months of hostility after it stormed out of long-running six-nation disarmament talks in April.
