Leonbergers originated in Germany in the 1800s as a cross between a Newfoundland, Pyrenean Mountain Dog and a St Bernard.
The pupils of Ridgeway Primary School, in Park Avenue, South Shields, met Pets As Therapy volunteers who brought along King Charles spaniels Sam and Ben and Pyrenean mountain dogs Kendal and Brecon.
Pyrenean mountain dogs Zelba and Myfanwy beat other pedigrees to prizes at Crufts Dog Show.
