Raman (rä m n), Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata 1888-1970. Indian physicist who in 1928 demonstrated that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the light that is deflected changes in frequency. For the discovery of this effect, which is now named after him, Raman received the 1930 Nobel Prize for physics. He also conducted research in the physiology of vision. |
