The Tongan-born Junior All Black arrives in a rich vein of form after helping his Wellington Lions team win the Ranfurly Shield, as well as reaching the final of the Air New Zealand Cup.
The openside flanker has been on the comeback trail since damaging the calf in the New Zealand Maori's Pacific Nations Cup match against Fiji last month and played the full 80 minutes of Auckland's Ranfurly Shield victory against Poverty Bay on Tuesday.
Lam had been in charge of the Auckland Air New Zealand Cup side since 2004, culminating in last year's unbeaten run to the Air NZ Cup title and Ranfurly Shield success.
