A region of southeast Europe on the Balkan Peninsula roughly coextensive with ancient Macedon and including parts of modern-day Greece, Bulgaria, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. After the fall of the Alexandrian empire, it was held by Romans, Byzantines, Bulgars, Serbs, and Turks. The present division was largely determined after the Second Balkan War (1913). 2. A country of the central Balkan Peninsula. It was a constituent republic of the former Yugoslavia until it declared its independence in 1991. Skopje is the capital and the largest city.
