1. A region of south-central Africa south of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo and comprising modern-day Zambia and Zimbabwe. Probably inhabited since ancient times, it was formerly administered by the British South Africa Company.

The voters responded with a massive 'yes' vote and the Republic of Rhodesia was unilaterally declared on 1 March 1970.
While the Republic of Rhodesia adapted to economic and political sanctions in a way which can only be described, no matter what your political views are, as magnificent and the RSF attained a level of professionalism and military competence which was truly awesome, the war was never winnable for the Rhodesians and they were forced to the negotiating table in 1979.
