South Ossetia
A region of northern Georgia in the central Caucasus bordering on Russia. Annexed by Russia in the early 19th century, South Ossetia became a part of Georgia in 1922. Following Georgian independence from the USSR in 1991, the region was the scene of conflict between Ossetian separatists and Georgian government forces.

Tbilisi announced its desire to quit the Russian-dominated organization after a five-day war with Russia over the Georgian breakaway republic of South Ossetia last August.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The Republic of South Ossetia consists of a checkerboard of Georgian and Ossetian inhabited towns and villages in close proximity to one another administered by Georgia or South Ossetia, essentially by whichever group is in the majority.
An example of the latter centres on the Russian incursion into Georgia in response, they said, to Georgia's attack on the breakaway republic of South Ossetia.
