Rhi`zo`ceph´a`la


n. pl.1.(Zool.) A division of Pectostraca including saclike parasites of Crustacea. They adhere by rootlike extensions of the head. See Illusration in Appendix.

The association of Loxothylacus texanus Boschma (Cirripedia, Rhizocephala, Sacculinidae) and Goniopsis cruentata Latreille (Crustacea, Brachyura, Grapsidae) is reported from Cienaga de Cocoliso (Isla Grande, Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park).
The most remarkable and highly specialized parasitic barnacles are the roughly 200 species that belong to the order Rhizocephala, settling exclusively in crabs and hermit crabs.
