1901: Richard d'Oyly Carte, English impresario best remembered as the man behind Gilbert & Sullivan and who built the Savoy Theatre to house their works, died.
When Richard D'Oyly Carte decided to add some rooms on to the theatre he built to house Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy Operas, he took careful note of the luxury hotels they had stayed in on tour in the States.
