In the town are the ruins of the 12th century Helmsley Castle and a lovely three-mile walk along a section of the Cleveland Way footpath leads to the medieval monastery of Rievaulx Abbey.
Just out of the centre are the ruins of Helmsley Castle and its Walled Garden which was proving very popular with families, while a little further away is the spectacular Rievaulx Abbey, built in the 13th century and a centre of English religion for centuries.
