In this sense it bears a closer relationship to the typical division of singers between concertists (forming choir I) and ripienists (forming choir II).
The first, marked brevius, is stylistically similar to the Vesper psalms with alternation of soloists and ripienists.
One might extend Carter's discussion by imagining how Giovanni Gabrieli's "new" provision of busier parts for his designated soloists may have arisen in performance: what looks plain on earlier double-choir scores was probably heavily (and idiomatically) embellished by virtuoso soloists, free and perhaps eager to set themselves apart from the ripienists.
