In Renaissance central Europe, Frederick's successors as rulers of the Holy Roman Empire sponsored conjurers and freaks, but also the great astronomers Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler, who produced the Rudolphine Tables, a new set of calculations of the positions of the planets named after their patron, the Habsburg Emperor Rudolph II.
In my view emphasis on the historicism of the Rudolphine setting and greater contrasts between the languages of the opera (German alongside Czech, Latin, Spanish and Greek) may characterise future directorial conceptions of this opera, and directors are happily already moving away from choosing singers for the main role with an eye to the character's supposed 300-year curriculum vitae and towards the youngest and most appropriate singers.
Within the collections library resides a first edition of Johann Kepler's Rudolphine Tables, named for Kepler's benefactor, Emperor Rudolph 11 of Prague.
