Thanks to the recent opening of the archives of the former Holy Office (now the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) and of what was once known as the Sacred Congregation of the Index, three scholars have examined the work of six authors whose writings came to the attention of the Vatican in the late nineteenth century because they seemed to support the theory of evolution.
