Most of it belonged to the city-states of Milan and Como until by 1513, the gradual expansion by the Swiss cantons south of the Saint Gotthard barrier which had begun in the previous century with the annexation by Uri of the Levantina Valley, continued with the takeover of the whole area by all the then member cantons (except for the capital Bellinzona, which was retained by the three founding confederates, Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden).
