In the New Testament, a woman whom Jesus cured of evil spirits. She is also identified with the repentant prostitute who washed the feet of Jesus.

The name Barras probably comes from `barrows', or burial mounds relating to the leper hospital of Saint Mary Magdalene.
Thus the folks whose names appear on our basement wall rub elbows with Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Mary Magdalene and the kid who was gunned down on Chicago's South Side last week.
Consider the last sentence of her book: "We must not forget that it is our own age that officially memorializes Saint Mary Magdalene as a disciple; it was the 'Dark Ages' that honored her as a preacher and apostle of the apostles.
