Saint-Na·zaire  (s-nä-zr)
A city of west-central France at the mouth of the Loire River west of Nantes. Built on the ruins of an ancient Gallo-Roman town, it was an important naval base during both world wars. Population: 67,200.

The ship was docked at Saint Nazaire in occupied France to assist fleeing soldiers, but was destroyed by German bombers shortly before it could complete its voyage.
The Queen Mary 2 -- the world's largest liner at the time of its construction -- was in dry dock in the Atlantic port of Saint Nazaire when the walkway collapsed, sending 45 people plunging 18 metres (60 feet) to the ground.
The three were among six vets to meet her in Falmouth, Cornwall, to re-dedicate the port's Saint Nazaire memorial.
