Sa·ki·shi·ma  (säk-shmä, sä-ksh-mä)
An island group of Japan in the southern Ryuku Islands east of Taiwan. The islands were heavily bombed by the Allies in April-June 1945.

The study postulates that if the Chinese side were able to surprise Japan and rapidly occupy the Sakishima Islands, the SDF would find it difficult if not impossible to dislodge enemy forces on its own.
Their mission was to neutralize Japanese airfields in the Sakishima islands, which were between Okinawa and Formosa, but they faced a serious threat from the kamikaze onslaught.
