Sal·a·man·ca  (sl-mngk, sälä-mängkä)
A city of west-central Spain west-northwest of Madrid. Conquered by Hannibal in 220 b.c., it was captured by Moors in the 8th century a.d. and held by them until the late 11th century. Population: 156,000.
