An island of east-central Philippines in the Visayan Islands northeast of Leyte in the Samar Sea, an arm of the Pacific Ocean. The island was the first in the archipelago to be discovered by the Spaniards (1521).

In Cebu in Central Philippines, one person died from drowning while some 100 residents were left homeless after a tornado devastated 20 houses in the town of Canavid in Samar province.
The storm, packing sustained winds of 75kph, first struck eastern Samar province on Tuesday and swept across the centre of the country on Wednesday.
