The Sandek is a Godfather but there is also a Kvater (Gott-vater) who brings the to-be-circumcised infant to the mohel, circumcisor.
Hauptman cites three examples of change in note 29 of her article (women studying Jewish law; women being a sandek and who is a heresh [deaf-mute]) which she indicates "demonstrate" change in legal practices analogous to the change required to allow women to be communal prayer leaders.
