This famous artwork, a permanent attraction at Newcastle's Hatton Gallery, was created as a sort of art grotto, featuring myriad bits and pieces, after Schwitters fled Nazi Germany.
Byker- MERZ takes its name from the Merzbarn collage, by artist Kurt Schwitters, originally created inside a Lake District barn but now housed in the Hatton Gallery at Newcastle University.
He spent his childhood in Beirut and his teenage years in England, where he discovered the work of surrealist German painter and sculptor Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948).
