A Native American people made up of various primarily Creek groups who moved into northern Florida during the 18th and 19th centuries, later inhabiting the Everglades region as well, with present-day populations in Oklahoma and southern Florida. The Seminole Wars ended in the removal of the majority of the Seminoles to Indian Territory.
b. A member of this people.
2. Either of the Muskogean languages of the Seminole.

Much of the material has appeared in Mulroy's other publications over the years, but a 2002-03 controversy over whether freedmen should enjoy rights as members of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma brought his topic to public interest, and he revised his 1985 doctoral dissertation for Keele University, Relations Between Blacks and Seminoles After Removal.
About five or six years ago, something similar happened in the Seminole Nations where those leaders pushed a movement to kick the Freedmen people out.
