The whipping of a spinning top, representing Alleluia on the Saturday before Septuagesima, a ceremony not uncommon in this country in former times, is related to this practice.
On Septuagesima Sunday 1965, almost every altar in a Catholic church in the United States was turned around.
The most prized recording of chant that I own is one in a vivid blue jacket--with Gothic black-letter printing--for the Mass of Septuagesima (70 days before Easter), performed by the monks of Solesmes.
