SERGEI EISENSTEIN would probably turn in his grave, but this sci-fi action movie has put Russia back on the movie-making map more than 80 years after the old great sailed the Battleship Potemkin into film history.
In addition to the expected 1970s journalism on postmodern dance, one finds writing about rhythm tap, the Alvin Ailey and Paul Taylor companies, the Bolshoi choreography of Yuri Grigorovich, a Carmen ballet by the filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein, the elephant ballet by George Balanchine, experimental filmmaking, funding, arts administration, issues of copyright protection for choreographers, the moral tradition of beauty in ballet, and the use of smell in dance.
In fact, ask any film buff their favourite and they'll drop names like Orson Welles, Akira Kurosawa or Sergei Eisenstein.
