The essays consider broader areas of African American religion such as literature and religion, preaching and sermonic traditions, healing and health, popular culture, the urban context, education, the psychology of religious behavior, and worship.
The introductory essay and the edited sermons make this book somewhat useful to Jewish intellectual historians interested in the popularization of Jewish theology through the sermonic arts, but Najara could hardly be considered a theologian of note.
By speaking in this sermonic and violence-justifying manner, the president has sought to create "a kind of moral authority" (Ivie and Giner 2007) that transcends the usual banalities of mass-mediated discourse (see Bostdorff 2003; Conley, forthcoming; Murphy 2003).
