The serological tests used in BT are virus neutralization, complement fixation, competitive ELISA and agar gel immunodiffusion (the last two recommended by WAHO) [8].
Conventional serological tests are done based on the presence of antibodies and they take up to two to six weeks to give the correct result.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published a draft guidance that would require all tissue banks and blood centers to use serological tests of all donations of Human Cells, Tissues, and Cellular Tissue-Based Products (HCT/Ps), and allogenic blood donations for antibodies to T cruzi (Trypanosoma cruzi), the parasite that causes Chagas disease (trypanosomiasis).
