Shan·dong  (shändông) also Shan·tung (shntng, shäntng)
A province of eastern China bordered by the Bo Hai and the Yellow Sea. The eastern part of the province forms the Shandong Peninsula. Settled since very early times, it became a province under the Ming dynasty. Jinan is the capital. Population: 89,900,000.

Capital: Jinan. Pop.: 90 790 000 (2000 est.). Area: 153 300 sq. km (59 189 sq. miles)

A product of the oral history of Shandong province, one of many local legends, the story is thought to be largely true.
