A new peerage was created from court nobles and some former samurai, but most former samurai had to make do with the essentially hollow rank of shizoku.
Interestingly enough, although by 1892 the rank of shizoku (Samurai) had been abolished, Sasaki signed his name with his rank "shizoku" underneath.
