A city of central Romania northwest of Bucharest. Settled in the 12th century by German colonists from Saxony, it was destroyed by Tartars in 1241. The rebuilt city came under Austrian control in 1699. Population: 154,000.

Tour de force On October 14, following consultations with major political parties, Basescu did not mince his words in rejecting the nomination of respected Sibiu mayor Klaus Johannis as an independent prime minister at the helm of a technocrat cabinet.
Three opposition parties, the Social Democrats (PSD), the Liberals (PNL) and the ethnic Hungarian UMD party had put forward their own candidate for the job: Sibiu Mayor Klaus Iohannis.
He will coordinate the research and development activities of Continental in Romania at a national level, in the locations Timisoara, Sibiu and Iasi.
