Its complex humanity - warm and apprehensive at the same time - needed a more reliable pulse than Roland B|er gave it, and the essential lilting Sicilienne structure of the second movement was flimsy.
This is beautifully economic writing, offering firm proof that the evening belonged more to principal flautist Cormac Henry than any other, his skills transferred from the wonderful melodic line of Faure's third movement Sicilienne through to the utmost fluidity required for the daybreak sequence of Ravel's Daphnis ballet.
They range from classical pieces -a prelude by Chopin, a song by Rimsky-Korsakov, the Sicilienne by Faur and a serenade by Schubert -to folk tunes and film music.
