siltstone  (sltstn)
A fine-grained sedimentary rock consisting primarily of compacted and hardened silt. Siltstones are similar to shale but without laminations. They vary in color from black or gray to brown or red.

These units are represented by the intercalating sequence of reddish-brown, yellowish-red and pinkish-red sandstone, variegated siltstones and reddish-brown silty claystones.
The siltstones are arkosic, have very angular grains, and apparently represent immature volcanic sediments.
A late 2004 reverse circulation hole (HC04-1) ended at 1,367 feet (417 metres) in the stratigraphically higher Woodruff Formation and intersected altered, locally calcareous siltstones and quartzites with silicification and occasional iron-rich dolomite veining.
