1. A symphony that is shorter than usual or that calls for fewer than the usual number of instruments.
2. A small symphony orchestra, especially one consisting of stringed instruments only.

The first event, on July 7, will be Faure's Requiem and Secular Music, performed by the Northumbria University Choir and the Newcastle Sinfonietta.
Many of his works are unknown in the UK, but the London Sinfonietta plugged a gaping hole in that knowledge when George Benjamin conducted a magnificently well prepared UK premiere of Les Espaces Acoustiques, the cycle of six instrumental works Grisey composed between 1974 and 1985.
