1. Any of the 15 states of the Union in which slavery was legal before the Civil War, including Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
2. A nation under totalitarian rule.

The Germans'' stance of anti-slavery position in the Southern United States brought about violent clashes in slave states such as Texas during the American Civil War.
