Since 1998, Penwest and Sanofi-Synthelabo have been working together to manufacture Slofedipine XL(R), a controlled release version of nifedipine indicated for the treatment of hypertension, which Sanofi-Synthelabo currently markets as 30 mg and 60 mg versions in the U.
Nifedipine XL is also marketed by Sanofi-Synthelabo in the United Kingdom under the brand name Slofedipine XL(R) and its 30 and 60 mg versions have received regulatory approval in Italy.
This improvement in margins is due to manufacturing volume efficiencies in Penwest's Emcocel plants, as well as an improvement in product mix, primarily with increased sales of bulk TIMERx to support the Sanofi launch of Slofedipine.
