1. An opening or a cavity into which an inserted part is designed to fit: a light-bulb socket.
2. Anatomy
a. The concave part of a joint that receives the end of a bone.
b. A hollow or concavity into which a part, such as the eye, fits.

To furnish with or insert into a socket.

The socketed axes have ribbed decoration and date back to the Late Bronze Age between 1000 and 800BC.
A palstave and a socketed axe were found together just west of Haydon Bridge in 1835-6 during the cutting of the North Eastern Railway.
That new trade profession I mentioned is Jewelcrafting - as well as being profitable, it also lets you create specific stones to fit into socketed weapons.
