Songhay had a very elaborate system of taxation and regulation of import and export, and so did states in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi or the Niger Delta, where historical sources tell of British colonists complaining about it. The same goes for Wolof (365-442) with three manuscripts in the fifth chapter, Mandingue (443-484) with two manuscripts in the sixth chapter, Songhay (485-516) with one manuscript in the seventh chapter and Tamasheq (517-538) with one manuscript in the final chapter. This, of course, reminds us that Stoller himself is an anthropologist who lived as a Peace Corps in Niger, in the same locales visited by Lyons (some of the people portrayed here are adapted from his real life account of his experience in Nigers Songhay country, In Sorcerys Shadow. |
