According to the Massachusetts Spy, Worcester's weekly paper, the Sons of Freedom put on quite a display.
This was not in the nature of the Brummies, as William Hutton made plain for "the sturdy sons of freedom having cast up slight works at each end of the town, and barricaded the lesser avenues, rejected the offer and the officers".
At a grand dinner at City Tavern in Philadelphia, a newspaper editor proposed a toast: "May the Fourth of July, that glorious and memorable day, be celebrated through America by the sons of freedom from age to age, till time shall be no more.
