Central banks suspended specie payments and fired up the printing presses to finance the war effort.
The states with banking institutions required banks to accept Confederate currency on deposit at par as a new condition for the suspension of specie payment.
It did threaten, however, that any future suspension would in itself constitute a forfeiture of the charter--a threat that was not carried out when the bank suspended specie payment in 1839 (Harding 1895, 17).
