Other birds being hit by European fishbaited ermen include the great shearwater, which reportedly loses 50,000 birds every year in longline hake fisheries off Ireland and the Steller's eider duck caught in gill-nets in the Baltic Sea.
The lagoon is home as well to migrating and breeding Steller's eider (an officially threatened diving duck), tundra swans and the emperor goose.
Annual surveys provide data about year-to-year changes in Steller's eider breeding and information on the distribution in the Barrow area.
