The company's third large-scale demonstration project, based on the STORS or Sludge-To-Oil Reactor System, recently received a $3 million grant from Congress to design, build and operate the demonstration facility within the San Bernardino Valley (California) Municipal Water District.
The concept sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, but the new STORS technology, developed by Battelle Laboratories, the world's largest independent research and development organization, is no longer a figment of the imagination STORS, an acronym for Sludge-To-Oil Reactor System, converts raw, undigested sewage sludge into a burnable fuel oil.
