stron·ti·um  (strnch-m, -t-m, -shm)
n. Symbol Sr
A soft, silvery, easily oxidized metallic element that ignites spontaneously in air when finely divided. Strontium is used in pyrotechnic compounds and various alloys. Atomic number 38; atomic weight 87.62; melting point 769°C; boiling point 1,384°C; specific gravity 2.54; valence 2. See Table at element.

[From New Latin strontia, strontium oxide, from English strontian; see strontianite.]

strontic (-tk) adj.

strontium [ˈstrɒntɪəm]
n
(Chemistry / Elements & Compounds) a soft silvery-white element of the alkaline earth group of metals, occurring chiefly in celestite and strontianite. Its compounds burn with a crimson flame and are used in fireworks. The radioisotope strontium-90, with a half-life of 28.1 years, is used in nuclear power sources and is a hazardous nuclear fall-out product. Symbol: Sr; atomic no.: 38; atomic wt.: 87.62; valency: 2; relative density: 2.54; melting pt.: 769°C; boiling pt.: 1384°C
[from New Latin, from strontian]

strontium  (strnch-m, -t-m)
Symbol Sr
A soft, silvery metallic element of the alkaline-earth group that occurs naturally only as a sulfate or carbonate. One of its isotopes is used in the radiometric dating of rocks. Because strontium salts burn with a red flame, they are used to make fireworks and signal flares. Atomic number 38; atomic weight 87.62; melting point 769°C; boiling point 1,384°C; specific gravity 2.54; valence 2. See Periodic Table.

In the Treatment of Peripheral Osteoporosis (TROPOS) study, 5091 postmenopausal women (mean age, 77 years) with osteoporosis who were not receiving any antiosteoporosis medications were randomly assigned to receive, in double-blind fashion, 2 g per day of strontium ranelate (680 mg per day of elemental strontium) or placebo for five years.

Previously, the rocks outside the crater ring were suspected to be older than those inside, but now researchers have for the first time been able to determine their precise age using a method based on the isotope ratios of strontium 87 to strontium 86 in the limestone.
