Stras·bourg  (sträsbrg, sträz-, sträz-br)
A city of northeast France near the German border east of Nancy. Strategically important since ancient times, it became a free imperial city in 1262, was occupied by France in 1681, and passed to Germany in 1871. The city was recovered by France in 1919. Population: 273,000.
