A writ containing a command to stay legal proceedings, as in the halting or delaying of the execution of a sentence.
[Middle English, from Medieval Latin supersedes, you must desist (from the writ), from Latin, second person sing. present subjunctive of supersedre, to desist from; see supersede.]
