One of the paired abdominal appendages of certain aquatic crustaceans, such as shrimp, lobsters, and isopods, that function primarily for carrying the eggs in females and are usually adapted for swimming. Also called pleopod.

swimmeret  (swm-rt)
One of the paired abdominal appendages of certain aquatic crustaceans, such as shrimp, lobsters, and isopods. Swimmerets are normally found on the first five abdominal segments and typically terminate in paired oarlike branches. They function primarily for carrying the eggs in females and are usually adapted for swimming. Also called pleopod.

Female lobsters have wider tails than males, and their first set of swimmerets is feathery, while males' are bony.
Aside from the added breadth, females'' swimmerets (the appendages under the tale) are light and feathery unlike the males'' which are bony and hard.
