Becker's fieldwork took place primarily in the village of Mezguida and environs, located in the Tafilalet oasis of southeastern Morocco.
His incursions also took him south, to the oasis of Tafilalet, the home of the Sherifian dynasty and an important trading centre, thus compounding insult and injury.
Descendants of the Prophet Mohammed the family, originally from the Hejaz, emigrated to Morocco in the 15th century and settled at Tafilalet, a string of oases to the south east bordering on the Sahara.
