He flew 32 missions as a member of the 82nd Air Force 489th Bomb Group, 845th Bomb Squadron, Crew 36, as the tail gunner on the B24 Mizpah, during which time he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Aerial Gunner Medal, and various Oak Leaf Clusters and Mission Medals.
He served as a tail gunner in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was held in a POW camp in Italy.
