The Calotype or Talbotype Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) developed an alternate process in England about the same time as Daguerre was busy in France.
A comparison of an early Daguerreotype and a Talbotype would show the Daguerreotype to be a far more realistic representation of the original view.
