French politician and diplomat known for his capacity to survive political change. He held a variety of public offices during the French Revolution, Napoleon's reign, the Bourbon restoration, and the reign of Louis Philippe.

He secretly negotiated with the Allies against Napoleon I from 1808 and was France's representative at the Congress of Vienna (1815)
