n. pl.1.(Zool.) A tribe of edentates comprising the sloths. They are noted for the slowness of their movements when on the ground. See Sloth, 3.
2.(Zool.) An order of minute aquatic arachnids; - called also bear animalcules, sloth animalcules, and water bears.

The samples include tardigrades - also known as water bears - seeds and microscopic bacteria.
The critters, known as tardigrades, survived fatal levels of solar radiation and the airless vacuum of space, which would instantly kill a human.
Researchers exposed dried-up tardigrades to open space conditions -- vacuum, ultra-violet radiation from the sun and cosmic radiation -- while aboard the FOTON-M3, a European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft launched in September 2007 that orbited 270 kilometers (170 miles) above the Earth.
